What is a competitor analysis?

In plain wordsA competitor analysis compares your website with your competitors': who ranks higher on Google, who ChatGPT and others name, which topics the competition covers and where it spends on ads. The result is a list of what to tackle first.

Drawn fox with an orange scarf reading a map

Like looking into the shop window

You see what is in the neighbor's window and why people stop there. Only on Google and in AI answers.

Same question, asked many times

AI answers change. So we ask the same questions several times and to several systems and count who gets named how often.

Gaps become pages

Topics your competitors cover and you do not end up as suggestions in your plan, sorted by value.

Why rankings alone are no longer enough

Classic analyses stop at positions and backlinks. Now there is a second place where companies compete for customers: the AI answer.

2 of 25questions cited atziry.com as a source, in our own measurement
36 of 38subtopics without own visibility, same measurement
7.2%of domains appear both in Google AI Overviews and in answers from language models
95%of questions: no website is cited by all three AI systems

We measured ourselves first. Even if you do well on Google, you can be almost invisible in AI answers, and that is exactly where competitors catch up.

Sources: 2 of 25 and 36 of 38: measurement of atziry.com in the Atziry platform, 30 Sep to 2 Nov 2026, 6 runs, 5 systems, brand questions excluded. 7.2%: Search Engine Land 2025. 95%: measurements in the Atziry platform, December 2025 to October 2026.

When an analysis pays off

Four typical occasions where we recommend a competitor analysis.

Relaunch

Before the restart

Before pages get rebuilt, it should be clear which topics and questions the new website has to cover.

Standstill

Rankings do not move

If nothing happens despite new content, the comparison shows what the others do differently.

New topic

New market or offer

Who already owns the topic, and where are questions nobody answers well yet?

AI

AI names others

Customers say ChatGPT recommended a competitor. The analysis shows for which questions and why.

FAQ about competitor analysisIncluding the questions for which AI cites other providers today.

What does a competitor analysis cover beyond rankings?
Besides positions on Google, we compare who gets named in AI answers, which topics and questions competitors cover and which ads they run. Only together does it show why someone is ahead.
How do I find out who leads for my search terms?
We measure positions for your key search terms and compare them week by week. Often the strongest competitors online are different from the ones you know from everyday business.
Why does a smaller competitor rank ahead of us?
Usually because its page answers the query more precisely, covers a topic more narrowly or is technically cleaner. On Google, relevance to the single question counts more than company size. A competitor analysis compares page by page what is there and missing on your side.
How do you compare competitors in ChatGPT and other AI systems?
You ask the same questions several times to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI and count which brands and sources get named. We leave out questions containing your brand name, otherwise the comparison would be flattering.
Which topics are missing on my website?
The analysis lists topics, questions and entities competitors cover and you do not, with example pages, sorted by how often AI systems cite sources there.
How do I uncover content gaps with AI search queries?
With three sources: the questions your customers ask ChatGPT and Google, the pages the AI cites for them, and the site: queries in your Search Console that AI systems use to look things up on your website. Where the AI cites only competitors for a question, or finds nothing on your site, an answer is missing.

Which strengths of my brand resonate with AI users?
A brand perception analysis shows this: we ask ChatGPT, Gemini and other services about your offer and evaluate which qualities your brand is described with, in what tone, and which brands are named instead of yours.
d · a
How reliable are the numbers?
AI answers fluctuate, so we measure repeatedly and show how many measurements are behind a value. A visibility index is an estimate, not revenue. We explain what a value means and what it does not.
Can you analyze my competitors' ads too?
Yes. We look at ad copy and search terms and derive ideas for your own campaigns.

What does a competitor analysis cost?
It depends on the number of competitors, topics and languages and on whether the view should be updated continuously. In the first call we clarify the scope, then you get a fixed quote.
What is competitive intelligence?
The ongoing, systematic observation of competitors. Online it includes rankings, AI mentions, content and ads.
