What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained simply

Answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini write answers from individual paragraphs of other websites. AEO is the work of making one of those paragraphs yours.

One good paragraph beats a long page.

The short answerAnswer Engine Optimization (AEO) means writing content so that answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini pick it as a source and cite it. SEO aims for a spot in the search results, AEO for a place in the answer itself.

What an answer engine is

A search engine shows a list of links. An answer engine writes a finished answer and lists its sources below. Examples are ChatGPT with web search, Perplexity, Gemini and the AI answers in Google Search.

An everyday picture: the search engine is a librarian who puts ten books on your desk. The answer engine reads the books itself and tells you in three sentences what they say. As a provider, what matters is whether a sentence from your book ends up in that summary.

AEO, SEO and GEO compared

The three terms describe different layers of the same task: being found and being named. They overlap, and not everyone uses them the same way. This is how we use them:

What you work onPage, technology, linksBrand, entities, source landscapeAnswer paragraphs, FAQ, structure

The bigger picture is covered in What is GEO?. AEO is the part you put into practice on your own pages.

How answer engines pick sources

  1. 01FindThe engine uses its training knowledge and, for current questions, a web search. Pages that rank high are more likely to make the shortlist.
  2. 02SplitIt splits the pages it finds into passages and checks which ones fit the question.
  3. 03Pick and citePassages that answer the question clearly and are clearly tied to a provider end up in the answer and are named as a source.

The Google ranking plays a big part. In our provider analysis with 873 real search queries from Austria, websites in positions 1 to 3 were cited in Google’s AI Overview about 3.8 times as often as websites in positions 4 to 10. Good AEO needs good SEO.

Five levers for AEO

Splitting it into five levers is our own choice, not a scientific model. Each lever says how well it is backed.

  1. 1

    Citable answer paragraphs

A paragraph that fully answers a question in two to four sentences can be lifted out and cited.

How to do it: Every important page and section starts with the direct answer, details follow.

Measured in our dataDirect answers go reliably with citations in Google AI Overview and Perplexity, data test.

  2. 2

    FAQ with the answer first

Question and answer pairs help when the answer comes right away. FAQ schema alone is not a shortcut.

How to do it: Use real customer questions and answer each in the first sentence. Schema is optional and must match the visible text.

Measured in our dataFAQ schema went with citations only in Perplexity. Ahrefs found no rise across 1,885 pages that added it (Ahrefs 2026).

  3. 3

    The same details everywhere

Answer engines tie statements to entities: business, service, place, person. Contradictions weaken those ties.

How to do it: Use the same name, services and location on your website, in profiles and in your structured data.

Experience, not measuredFrom our work on entities, without our own measurement of the effect.

  4. 4

Appear in the sources that get cited

Answers are built from several sources. If you are missing there, you are named less often.

How to do it: Check which pages are cited for your questions and get present there.

Experience, not measuredWe see which pages are cited in every measurement. We have not measured the effect of a new mention.

  5. 5

    Measure repeatedly

Answers vary between queries, services and days. Without repetition you cannot tell whether a lever works.

How to do it: A fixed set of questions, several services, measurements on several days, reported as share against competitors.

Measured in our dataAsked the same question three times, Google’s AI Overview made the same call on naming providers in only about 71% of cases.

What the data says about format rules

A common tip is to break up text with lists, tables and statistics so AI cites it more. Our data does not show that:

Lists and tables can still help readers. Just do not treat them as a trick for more citations.

How to measure AEO

AEO can be measured, but not with a single test. Three rules make it reliable:

  1. Measure several times: ask the same questions on several days.
  2. Report services separately: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google one by one, because they use different sources.
  3. Give a range: track your brand’s share of all mentions with its range, not as a single number.

How to spot good AEO work

An experienced provider can show how they measure. Ask for:

  • a baseline measurement before the start,
  • the method: which questions, which services, how many repeats,
  • trends with ranges instead of single screenshots,
  • a fixed price agreed in advance.

What AEO costs and when it pays off

The effort depends on how many pages are reworked and how many questions are measured. Before we start, we give you a fixed price based on scope.

AEO pays off mainly where your customers ask questions that AI services answer with recommendations. For about 35% of the search queries in our analysis, no service named a provider. There AEO does little and classic SEO does more.

Common questions about AEOShort answers

What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means writing content so that answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini pick it as a source and cite it.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims for positions in the search results and for clicks. AEO aims for a paragraph of your website to be used in an AI’s answer and named as a source. SEO stays the foundation, because well ranked pages are cited much more often.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
GEO usually means the whole picture: brand, sources and content. AEO mainly means the work on individual answer paragraphs on your own pages.
What is GEO?
Why is my website missing from AI answers when my SEO is fine?
Because each service uses different sources and because many questions name no provider at all. Often there is also no paragraph that answers the question in its first sentence.
Provider analysis
How do you measure AEO?
Ask the same questions on several days in several services and count how often your brand is named or your page is cited. A single test is not enough, because answers fluctuate.
Is AEO worth it?
If your customers ask questions where AI services recommend providers, usually yes. A measurement shows whether that applies to your questions.
